Kamala Harris Breaking Down The Barriers To Lead Our Way!

She is the first female vice president-elect. The first Black South Asian woman to be elected Vice President. She is the first elected vice president to graduate from Howard, a historically Black institution. She is Kamala Harris!

In America, women have been campaigning for higher office since before they could vote and have been inspired by multiple events throughout history. Their vision and efforts are what broke precedent for women who came after them. Vice President Harris follows a long list of empowered women who did so. In this instance, her biracial roots and upbringing mean that she embodies diverse American identities who she can actively engage with and appeal to. In any context, her rise in power is historic! Another landmark moment expanding the idea of what is certainly achievable in American politics. This victory gives young girls and women the opportunity to know that their goals are attainable because they will have a vice president who reflects them. Representation matters, however, there is no denying that representation alone doesn’t necessarily lead to transformative change, in fact, a large community of coloured women have fought, organised and voted to reach this very moment. Now, Vice-President Kamala Harris inherits a responsibility to represent the demands of the people who ushered her into office.

She is heir to a legacy of elected officials, and unsuccessful candidates who paved this path to the White House. This moment it is particularly meaningful because Ms Kamala Harris is taking office at a time of deep consequence, with Americans fighting over the role of institutional racism and confronting a pandemic that has disproportionately devastated black and brown communities. Her legal experience and advocacy for police reform will be valuable in a White House that has promised to address “systemic” misconduct in US police forces. There is a whole new basis of inspiration here, that will continue to grow as women keep on fighting. The historic moment for black Americans is worth celebrating, not only in America but everywhere. Kamala Harris has definitely paved the way for more young girls to aspire to get politically involved. The path is illuminated for more women to want to run for office no matter where you come from, or who you are.
