“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou
Since being at University my experiences have revealed to me how much my attitude can impact my overall mindset and the way I perceive the world. The fact is, Change is inevitable, although accepting and learning to anticipate it is not, and for many people understanding that is a major mental barrier.
Many people don’t try to change their lives until they’re in a desperate circumstance and inevitably that’s why they fail simply because they’re in the wrong frame of mind. Generally, we all go through life with the intention of living life to the fullest, but we allow thoughts and obstacles to hold us back. The first step in transforming your mindset is to recognise that there is a direct link to your attitude, meaning a positive mind-set stimulates a positive attitude which empowers a confident approach to the challenges life presents with a positive outlook. Therefore, by changing your attitude, your mindset shall automatically be adjusted which enables an increase of focus on the brighter side of life. With this way of thinking and using attitude positively, you can produce positive, successful results! Though, the question you should ask yourself, is this what you aspire to achieve?
To some people this may be an obvious aspect to life however, this is a lesson I personally required time to determine. In the past, I have truly struggled to maintain a positive attitude throughout the year, I guess as a student a course of things can get a too overwhelming – deadlines, group-work, social life etc I have been advised to “get on with it” but for those who can relate, it’s not as easy as that. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” As human beings we generally have this poor manner of acquiring a negative mindset to how we inspect our lives, we find constant factors to complain about as our thoughts never switch off. The fact is 95% of our thoughts are run by the subconscious mind. Our thoughts literally run our life. But s
“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” – Buddha.
Like me, most people value external recognition of their achievements, in a sense, it’s a way of feeling rewarded although in situations where this is not the case there is a major loss of motivation to make an active change to the personal attitude or overall mind-set. To be clear, there’s a difference between mindset and attitude; an attitude is something that can be executed or witnessed. An example of this is taking criticism in a positive manner or smiling at a stranger.
