Here is yet another example, of the hypocrisy in the US law enforcement response to the protest. Evidently, there is a stark contrast between the law enforcement reaction to the storming of the US Capitol by pro-Trump extremists and the suppression of peaceful BLM protests. When Black people protest for peace, freedom and justice, they are all too often challenged by National Guard troops or police equipped with assault rifles, shields, tear gas and combat helmets ultimately treated with excessive use of force. However, during today’s events, some police officers were pictured taking selfies, opening up gates, offering the crowd guidance through the Capitol grounds, and helping women down the Capitol steps! You do not have to look far to see how white supremacy is perpetuated in law and whilst this comes as no surprise, it is simply outrageous to see how white protestors can encounter so little resistance and successfully breach the Capitol, while black protestors would be lying dead in front of the capitol building right now. White supremacy, as well as white privilege, is on full display in the US Capitol! Don’t forget that white privilege is both a legacy and a cause of racism.
Take notice that it’s not just about beliefs to continue white supremacy. It is also about gaining complete control of people and property. The extremists deem America and everything it has to offer to only be theirs, while everyone else should leave. These insurgents pushed the boundaries on law enforcement and democratic ideals and yet experienced close to no consequences. This confidence with law enforcement not only now but throughout history show how police often privilege whiteness over blackness. The problem is that these extremists are too accustomed to police officers being deferential with them. Although, today’s riots change the way the world views the US. No one in the world is likely to see, respect, fear, or depend on America in the same way again. There is no doubt that the US is the most politically dysfunctional and divided of advanced industrial democracies.
America should be straightforward about the fact that while multiple people are attracted to law enforcement because they sincerely aspire to protect and serve the country, others explore these types of jobs to enforce white supremacist beliefs. Enforcing these values implies assigning pursuits of racial injustice and criminalising people of colour. For white supremacists, people of colour are generally viewed as a contrast to white supremacy and anyone who actively and openly embraces racial justice is a potential target of violence. But the point here is to have the ability to recognise that white privilege is integral to the anti-bias work of the white community. As a community and generation, it’s our responsibility to have an acknowledgement that does not silence the voices of those most affected by white privilege; a realisation that does not ignore where it roots from and why it has constant power! White supremacy very much exists, choose to see it for what it is … the power to remain silent in the face of racial inequity.
